The Same Metabolic Data That Built World Champions — Now Available to You

For more than four decades, lactate threshold testing has been the gold-standard tool used by every world-class endurance program — from Norwegian triathlon dynasties to Kenyan marathon camps to WorldTour cycling teams — is built on one foundational measurement: where your body's metabolism shifts gears.

Most athletes still train by feel, by age-predicted heart rate formulas, or by generic percentages pulled from a textbook. The result is a training prescription that's approximately right for the average person and precisely wrong for you. Lactate testing replaces that guesswork with physiology.

What You'll Learn

A single Lactate Threshold Assessment gives you three numbers that will reshape how you train:

Your Aerobic Threshold (LT1) — the upper boundary of true Zone 2. This is where mitochondrial development lives, where fat oxidation is maximized, and where the longevity-oriented endurance work prescribed by every leading exercise physiologist actually happens. Train above it and you compromise the adaptation. Most athletes who think they're doing Zone 2 are training a full zone too hard.

Your Anaerobic Threshold (LT2) — the highest intensity you can sustain before lactate accumulates faster than you can clear it. This is your threshold pace, your hour-of-power, the ceiling for sustained efforts, and the anchor point for every interval prescription that matters.

Your Metabolic Signature — the shape of your lactate curve reveals your substrate utilization and metabolic flexibility. A right-shifted curve indicates strong fat oxidation and aerobic capacity. A steep early rise indicates heavy glycolytic reliance and a clear need for more aerobic base work. Either way, you'll know exactly what your next training block should emphasize.

The Protocol

Your assessment is a stepped incremental test conducted on a bike or treadmill, calibrated to your sport and current fitness:

  • Warmup and baseline: 5–10 minutes of easy effort with a baseline lactate sample
  • Progressive stages: 5–7 stages of 3–4 minutes each, with intensity stepped up incrementally and a capillary lactate sample drawn in the final 20 seconds of each stage
  • Heart rate, pace/power, and RPE tracked continuously throughout
  • Termination once you've clearly crossed LT2 — typically when lactate exceeds 6 mmol/L
  • Recovery sampling at 1, 3, and 5 minutes post to assess lactate clearance

Total appointment time: 45–60 minutes. Unlike VO2 max testing, lactate threshold testing does not require pushing to absolute exhaustion — the protocol is significantly less brutal and lower-risk while delivering the data that most directly answers the question every serious athlete asks: how hard should I train, and at what pace?

What You Take Home

  • A one-page Training Zone Card with five precise zones anchored to your physiology — heart rate, pace or power, and RPE for each zone
  • A detailed Metabolic Profile Report explaining your lactate curve, your threshold positions, your substrate utilization pattern, and what they mean for how you should train
  • A consultation with your specialist to walk through your results, answer questions, and outline the training priorities your data points to

Who This Is For

Lactate threshold testing delivers the most direct application for endurance athletes — runners, cyclists, triathletes, rowers, swimmers — who live and die by training intensity prescription. It's equally valuable for CrossFit and hybrid athletes dialing in aerobic capacity and recovery, masters athletes tracking metabolic adaptation over time, and the rapidly growing audience of longevity-focused trainees who want their Zone 2 work anchored to actual physiology rather than estimation.

If you train seriously, you deserve to train accurately. Your physiology is not a formula.
